Neurodiversity Paradigm 101: Theory and Practice for Careers Education

The education sector has enthusiastically adopted neurodiversity language, but has practice actually shifted? This keynote will explore and unpack the neurodiversity paradigm for the career education community: examining the difference between the pathology paradigm and neurodiversity paradigm, identifying "paradigm-washing" in action, and exploring strategic and practical steps towards genuine neurodiversity-affirming practice in career development and employment preparation.

This session will centre theory that drives practice, and examine biocertification, neuronormativity, and other important concepts that underpin inclusive and affirming approaches to career support and education. Expect discomfort, critical reflection, and tools for institutional change - not a checklist of workplace adjustments or Neurodevelopmental Conditions 101! This keynote draws on the work of Sonny Jane Wise and Nick Walker, extending neurodiversity paradigm principles for the career education context.
